Hi-Impact “Vitamin C Orange”, Post Coupe
For late-sixties Mopar fans, the “A” designation was a clarion call to the faithful that another special package was coming down the pipeline. In 1969 the A12 marker signified a mid-year 440 engine fitted with triple 2-barrel carburetion. Still, it was much more than that: the 1969 A12 M-code Road Runner is one of the meanest, leanest, fastest street machines of all time, capable of intimidating with its looks alone and backing it up with relentless acceleration that only the mighty Hemi could surpass.
This Road Runner is one of a mere 388 A12 M-code cars equipped with the Hemi 4-speed manual transmission and the 390-horsepower 440 6BBL engine that was produced in a limited batch over a three-month period in 1969. Topped with three 2-barrel Holleys, it is entirely correctly date coded and has been balanced and blueprinted. Like all the cars produced with this famous code, it features a lift-off Black fiberglass hood, 15-inch Black steel wheels, chrome lug nuts and Red Streak tires; this beautifully sano Bird wears the rare Hi Impact Vitamin C Orange. And while the new-for-1969 Road Runner’s interior may have been considered nothing to write home about at the time, this one is exactly as it was meant to be.
All these features converged in a fire-breathing beast that made such an impact upon its arrival that Motor Trend named it the Car of the Year. In 2007, this very car had a similar effect at the Plymouth Nationals, where it won a well-deserved First Place.
